Val di Non
Predaia Highlands
Smarano
Population: 440
Altitude: 981m. slm
The village is sun-exposed and was an antique Roman settlement. Later it was transformed in a centre for specialized glass cutters. Remarkable is the Assunta church (12th – 13th century), badly damaged during a fire in 1759 and reconstructed in Baroque and Renaissance style. The altarpiece is a work of a G.B. Lampi's pupil. Interesting is the new organ on mechanical traction, realized in 1993 by G. Ghilardi and particularly fit for interpretation of Renaissance and Baroque music. In this village international courses for professional organists are held.
The Art Gallery and the Antiquaries must be visited. Smarano is quite active in the craft sector and all kind of activities connected with art: painters, sculptors, restorers, craftsmen in iron and wood, keeping alive the tradition. Roman foundation were found in Torri, and looked out onto the road from South Tyrol to Passo Predaia in direction “pons altus”, the connection between the two sides of the Noce river and Cles. From there you have breathtaking views on the mountains of the Valle di Non, the Maddalene and the Brenta Dolomites.
